Structural growing medium
Trees in Hard Landscapes, A Guide for Delivery, published by the Trees and Design Action Group in September 2014, defines a structural growing medium (or structural soil) as: ‘…a tree-growing medium combining soil and sand or stone that can be compacted to the required level to support a load-bearing hard surface above (eg footways, car parks, carriageways) while permitting root growth.’
